THE FACE OF MUSIC

This T shirt caught my attention. It is iconic and undeniably cool. It made me wonder who else deserves such a shirt. Who has altered the face of music by leaving an indelible mark upon it? This list is my final decision on who, in my opinion, changed the face of music and earned his place in the lexicon. They are unquestionably legends all. If I could wade through all the legal permissions, these are the T shirts I would create.

Aretha Franklin was the first woman elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has received nineteen Grammy’s, bested only by Alison Krauss’ twenty in the female vocalist category. Her position as an American institution has prompted Michigan to name her voice a natural resource. Aretha Franklin is the undisputed Queen of Soul.

Bob Marley is such a perfect hero. He and his bandmates in the Wailers came from almost nothing and made it big. They made their own instruments, out of things like cans and string and wire. They created arguably the best debut recording ever with a budget that would barely pay for catering for other top musical acts of the time. They made it out of Nine Miles and Trench Town and Jamaica and became superstars in London and New York and Tokyo and Cape Town.

Bob Marley never wrote a bad song. He left behind the most remarkable body of recorded work. "The reservoir of music he has left behind is like an encyclopedia," says Judy Mowatt of the I-Threes. "When you need to refer to a certain situation or crisis, there will always be a Bob Marley song that will relate to it. Bob was a musical prophet."
