There is a ridiculous amount of ways to get music these days and been that way for like a decade. I'd much rather have the channel showing content other than music. I'm not saying I watch a lot of MTV, because I don't like much of their content, just that if it was videos all day that would seem like kind of a waste.

I think showing cooking shows all day is a waste, but I would expect the Food Network to have them. Welcome to the land of making sense. MTv is great now, if you are in high school.

But, MTV was an established name, I don't really see how they can be blamed for transitioning from something that would be a dying niche TV channel to something that would still at least maintain the name brand.

Again, I'm not trying to talk too good about MTV and their quality of programming. I watch it for the real world/road rules challenges because those people are fucking NUTS and I think it's solid trainwreck TV.

I'm not saying MUSIC is dying. I'm saying Music via videos and the way MTV packaged it at one point is dying.

You used the cooking channel comparison. There aren't any cooking channels that are a brand the way MTV and other major channels are. Even if I don't like the programming MTV is putting on, I'm not going to fault them for wanting to maintain their brand.

Their "Brand" was music television. They now own VH1 and CMT. Be it I don't watch CMT, I know VH1 doesn't really do videos anymore. Luckily Fuse came along and picked up where MTv left off. It's the only one I would watch when I had satellite. What happened is that the execs figured out that sleazy shows would sell the station more than music videos. Since it's about money, they switched. So I just stopped watching. Just like when Speedvision became Speed Channel and acquired the permissions to air Nascar. It totally dominated the network since they could pull in more Billy Bob viewers that will watch shows like Nascar Tech. Again, driven by money and bringing in as may viewers as possible. So no, branding has nothing to do with it. Music videos are still alive and well. They just don't pull in nearly as much money. Of course the internet has helped that along as well, since you can go watch a music video whenever you want.

Right, and their brand would have diminished quite a bit had they continued without changing. Their brand is MTV and whatever they wanted to make of it, though. So, their brand had they not changed would be something no one would really give a shit about. They chose to keep their brand known by changing the content of it. Again, my main point is just that I'm not going to knock them for staying profitable and relevant.

I know it's about money. I've never not said that it was about money.

Combine that with your last line. It's not hard to get music and music videos. When MTV first started, that was a different situation.

They bailed on music videos long before the internet and streaming video was really available to the masses. However their "brand" is called music television. I don't open up Jeremy's Hot Dog Stand and them realize I could make more money by selling electronics so I ditch the dogs and start hocking electronics under the same name.

The brand is the letters. No one says, "are you watching Music Television today?" They know it by the letters.

So, when they made the decision to move away from music videos, what would the point have been to try and come up with a new name?

The brand is most definitely not "music television", it's whatever they want it to be.

Had you called your Hot Dog Stand...JHD and sold hot dogs, but then realized you could start mixing in some electronics sales, and those electronics sales begin to become more than the hot dog sales, well, your brand is most definitely not hot dogs. Which is where I think you make the mistake with MTV.

I laughed alright. But I don't find it worth a full show of laughing. I'd rather, oh I don't know, chew on my nails while watching the toilet flush over and over again.

I don't even know if the actual show is real, could have just been someone making a parody.

I wouldn't put it past MTv to air something like that.
