Silver Lake is the hipster district, on the east side of Los Angeles. Or it was in the 1990s. Now the hipster district has moved farther south and east, to Echo Park and Highland Park. And in any case, Beck’s too rich to be a hipster anymore. And yes, he is a Scientologist. In fact, he may even be a SECOND generation Scientologist.

Ah, Beck – he came out of Silver Lake the same time I was living there. I used to think he was brilliant, but now I wonder if he was just a musical anomaly – a bright spark in an ever-growing entropy of musical malaise. Which of course means he wasn’t really all that brilliant, else he would have been far more influential. (For many years I was – and sometimes still am – a rock critic. It probably shows. I’m busted. P.S. I hate Steve Miller.)
