So here’s a trailer that’s got something going for it. First off, the title rather neatly sums up the plot: with a name like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, you know there’s a good chance of seeing Abraham Lincoln, uh, hunting some vampires. Also? Johnny Cash and a sweet looking train explosion. On the other hand, I think we can all agree that this film would have been vastly improved if the early Nic Cage casting rumors were true and we had been treated to seeing Mr. Cage as the titular vampire-busting BAMF and future president, whispering and yelling his way through the Civil War. Although the guy they did cast clearly twirls a pretty mean axe, so there’s that.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter was produced by Tim Burton and directed by Timur Bekmambetov and is scheduled for June 2012 release.
Editor’s note – Robert Bodden is working his butt of on everything except putting titles on his posts. So when I go in and look at the posts I miss it. So I will punish him by giving his posts goobery names. Only you can help him!
I’ll start off by admitting I have never read a single book in the Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burroghs. I will also admit I don’t actually enjoy reading hard science fiction or fantasy novels. I like sci-fi set in modern times that are more in the techno thriller genre. After seeing John Carter, I am still not sure if I want to read the novel or not but damn the movie was freaking awesome!
I’m not sure what the marketing people at Disney were thinking. The trailers for John Carter all made me think “meh”. It looked like it might be a good time waster. I was wrong. John Carter actually has a story, a good story hidden amongst all the visual effects and action scenes.
John Carter has everything you could want from a movie: action, romance, humor and thrills. It also has a nice twist at the end that I didn’t see coming. Well, I saw a twist coming I was just wrong about what it would be. If you strip away the action and great special effects you are left with a fairly good love story. It’s a bit predictable but the the actors more than make up for it with strong performances and an actual sense of fun. Between scenes of political intrigue, struggles of martian clan domination and developing love interests we get to see John Carter grow from a man mourning his lost family to a man fighting for freedom and a new found love. He goes from wanting to get back home to finding a new one.
I saw the movie in IMAX 3D and I have to say the 3D was handled very well. If you can catch it in IMAX I say go for it. If not, go for it still. For a story that was first published in 1912, John Carter is an extremely entertaining flick that offers much more than what the dull trailers would have you believe.
If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it is reasonable to assume that it is, in fact, a duck. However, sometimes we give others the benefit of the doubt and willingly put aside the obvious. So if that duck were wearing a sign that said “I’m a goose,” we just might, on a good day, take its word for it. Or maybe I am just ridiculously gullible.
Shoot…Where was I going with this again? Ah, right, chick flicks (duck flicks now?). Chick flicks come in many disguises and are always desperately trying (and failing) to break that mold that defines it as such. There are good chick flicks. There are bad chick flicks. And then there are horrible chick flicks. Last weekend, I saw a horrible chick flick.
This psychological and action-packed movie takes place in the wilderness of Alaska, which is both beautiful and frightening, much like the The Grey itself. After their plane crashes, seven men, miraculously still alive and stranded in the middle of wolf territory, try to stay alive. But this isn’t just another “survival movie” like 127 Hours. It’s far greater than that and filled with heart-palpitating raw action, in addition to suspense. You won’t be bored, trust me.
Okay, I’ll be honest and start this off by letting you know that I love Nicolas Cage. There, I said it, it’s out in the open. No, not that kind of love. I love his movies. I’ve seen everything from Raising Arizona to Season of the Witch, and I loved them all. So it shouldn’t be any surprise that I love his newest flick Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. I know, basically everyone hated the original. Honestly, even though I liked the first film I was shocked to hear a sequel was being filmed.
