In “A Month of Sundays,” John Updike wrote, “Suspect each moment, for it is a thief, tiptoeing away with more than it brings.” Today, a moment stole from us one of our most prolific, poetic and versatile writers and, for that, I mourn. John Updike was controversial and, love him or hate him, he was important. Our libraries are the richer because of him. Rest well, sir. You’ve earned a break.
Goodbye, John Updike
