Users of Amazon.com’s e-reader device were surprised and unsettled over the past day to receive notice that George Orwell works they had purchased, including “1984” and “Animal Farm,” had been removed from their Kindle and their money refunded.
Unfortunately, this was not because these are two of the most overrated books ever written, but rather because someone had pirated ebooks to sell, or something. Animal Farm ain’t that bad, but 1984 is a fucking debacle, yet people love it.
But, seriously, hey, next time go to a used bookstore and pick up a copy for a couple bucks. It won’t VANISH on you.
Kindles make no sense to me cuz why do you need to have more than one book in your hand at a time?
I completely disagree. I think 1984 was great book. I can honestly say that reading it led me to discover other classic novels/authors and really kindled (heh) my interest in dystopian themes in literature.
I’m definitely in the minority on disliking those books.
THANK YOU! I just read “1984” last month b/c all my life I thought I was missing out on some amazing work of literary mastery – I totally skimmed through about 20 pages at some point in the middle. I felt like I was reading a bad research paper.
